Like most of you designers, i spend a great deal of time using the computer.  Squinting at the pixels ensuring every object is perfected, determining colors, working with 1-pixel width lines, working in the dark or underneath a horrible florescent light…its not really good for your eyes. you can mostly tell of this when your eyes start hurting, straining and for some you will get these ‘morning stars’ (the white gunk that builds up in the corner of your eye.

Your boss may be cheap and not provide a screen-filter which filters all of that blue light causing your eyes to tire. and most of all, alters how you look at design. we don’t want that, right?

Fed up with the headaches, strains and most recently, unable to read small text anymore… i asked my a friend about a optometrist. they said “you need to go to ‘J!INS’ as they have these interesting glasses which has the screen-filters built into the glasses. I thought “awesome” and headed over to the JINS location in Futakotamagawa (Setagaya, Tokyo).

Walking in, i saw a lot of customers browsing around the huge selection of glasses. most of them seem to complement the asian facial makeup and not that of mine, which is European. There were plenty of styles that did fit my European face and ended up with a choice of 5 pairs of frames. It was such a difficult decision, but managed to chose the one that my wife suggested (who is always right, of course).

After selecting my pair, i made my way to the counter. Thinking that i was just going to get screen-filtering glasses, they lady set me right up to get my eyes checked out. no appointment was needed (for my case, though others may end up waiting 30 minutes, depending upon how many customers are ahead of you).

JINS Eyeglasses are trendy so the store was planing music… a bit too loud, unfortunately. My Japanese is limited and the store optometrist only spoke Japanese…and for heaven sake, i had a cold. so it was difficult to communicate a bit. But the store clerk was patient.

After my exam and paying for the lens, frame and exam (which totaled about $130), they told me to return in 45 minutes…45 minutes!? Thinking something like this type of service in the United States would take at least a week, i was surprised. They had the lens-making machine called ‘KANNA’ that crafted my lenses in under an hour.

Came back under 45 minutes and my glasses were done! As the style i chose came with interchangeable arms (the part that holds the glasses), the price included 3 sets of these. my favorite: the white/snow camouflage. very cool. as for the lenses and my eyesight? absolutely wonderful. Besides the noisy music limiting my conversation with the optometrist and salesclerk, my experience was absolutely wonderful.

JINS Eyeglasses have 2 very cool features for their glasses:

  1. JINS SCREEN: (http://www.jins.com/us/jins-screen) which eliminates 25% of blue light. the majority of this blue light comes from smartphones
  2. JINS MEME: (https://www.jins-jp.com/jinsmeme/en/) bluetoothed glasses which tells your eye and body condition straight from JINS glasses to your smartphone
  3. JINS Prescriptions: great quality lenses made on-the-spot

Currently, JINS is only located in Japan (headquarters), China and currently only one store in San Francisco.  If you are ever able to get your hands on a pair of these glasses, do buy them. They are incredibly worth it. especially for protecting your eyes!
